About Torus
Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 540,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. Our mission is to build the world’s first mesh energy infrastructure — built to unite people and communities through resilient, secure, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.
At Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter.
About the Role
The Fabrication Manufacturing Production Manager is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing all fabrication operations supporting Torus's Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and related product lines. Reporting to the COO (Chief Operations Officer), you will own the day-to-day execution of fabrication schedules, manage production supervisors and floor personnel, and drive continuous improvement across safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, scaling manufacturing environment and has deep experience in metal fabrication, welding, CNC machining, and mechanical assembly. As a startup building complex energy systems at scale, there will be times when this role requires work outside its typical duties.
Who You Are
- A proven manufacturing leader with a track record of managing production teams and hitting targets in a fabrication-heavy environment
- A clear communicator who values transparent dialogue, gives feedback promptly, and seeks context before making assumptions
- Safety-first in mindset — you believe that a safe workplace is a productive workplace and you lead by example on the floor
- A problem-solver who approaches challenges with cautious optimism, leveraging data and team input to continuously improve
- Customer-minded — you understand your work powers sustainable energy systems for real communities, and quality is non-negotiable
- Comfortable with ambiguity — you thrive in a scaling startup environment where processes are still being built and refined
- Hands-on and floor-present — you lead from the production floor, not from behind a desk
Responsibilities
- Production Leadership: Plan, direct, and coordinate daily fabrication and production activities to meet output targets, quality standards, and delivery schedules. Own the production plan and communicate priorities clearly across shifts and teams.
- Team Management: Lead, develop, and mentor a team of production supervisors, fabrication technicians, CNC machinists, welders, and manufacturing technicians. Manage hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, time and attendance, and disciplinary actions.
- Fabrication Oversight: Oversee all fabrication processes including CNC machining (VTL, mill, lathe), welding (MIG/TIG), sheet metal forming, cutting, grinding, fitting, and mechanical assembly operations.
- Safety & Compliance: Champion a culture of safety on the production floor. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company PPE requirements, and all applicable health and safety standards. Partner with the Director of Safety to drive incident prevention and safety training.
- Quality Assurance: Collaborate with the Quality Manager to ensure all fabricated components and assemblies meet engineering specifications, tolerance requirements, and quality standards. Implement inspection checkpoints and corrective action processes.
- Continuous Improvement: Apply lean manufacturing principles and operational excellence methodologies to identify waste, reduce cycle times, improve yields, and increase throughput. Lead Kaizen events and process improvement initiatives.
- Capacity & Resource Planning: Manage labor allocation, equipment utilization, and material flow to optimize production capacity. Coordinate with supply chain and procurement to ensure timely availability of raw materials and components.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Supply Chain, and Facilities teams to support new product introductions (NPI), design-for-manufacturing (DFM) reviews, and production ramp-up activities.
- Metrics & Reporting: Track and report on key production metrics including output volume, on-time delivery, scrap/rework rates, labor efficiency, and safety incidents. Use data to drive decisions and present regular updates to leadership.
- Budget Management: Manage the fabrication department budget, including labor costs, tooling, consumables, and capital equipment needs. Identify cost-reduction opportunities without compromising quality or safety.
- Equipment & Maintenance: Ensure fabrication equipment and tooling are properly maintained and operational. Coordinate with maintenance teams on preventive maintenance schedules and capital equipment procurement.
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and progressive manufacturing experience
- 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment, with at least 3 years in a management or supervisory leadership role
- Strong working knowledge of fabrication processes: CNC machining, welding (MIG/TIG), sheet metal fabrication, mechanical assembly, and related operations
- Demonstrated ability to manage production schedules, labor planning, and resource allocation in a fast-paced environment
- Experience implementing lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, or operational excellence programs
- Solid understanding of quality management systems, engineering drawings, GD&T, and inspection methods
- Proficiency in ERP systems (NetSuite preferred), Google Workspace, and/or MS Office
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and manufacturing safety best practices
- Excellent leadership, communication, and team-building skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications
Preferred Experience
- Experience in energy storage, power electronics, aerospace, defense, or heavy industrial equipment manufacturing
- Experience scaling production operations in a startup or high-growth environment
- Familiarity with high-voltage electrical systems or electromechanical assemblies
- Forklift certification and/or prior experience operating a forklift
- Project management certification (PMP) or Six Sigma / Lean certification (Green Belt or above)
- Experience with capital equipment procurement and facility layout optimization
You’ll be a great fit at Torus if you’re motivated by building durable systems and taking responsibility for how they perform in the field. This role is well suited for a Fabrication Manager who enjoys working through ambiguity, collaborating closely across teams, and solving practical problems that directly impact product reliability and performance. If you take pride in thoughtful design, clear documentation, and seeing your work move from concept to deployment, you’ll find meaningful long-term impact here.
